Right To Roam is a participatory audio work, which will guide the listener on an exploratory, semi-random walk. The participant is presented with a radical history of walking and land use, contextualising the journey taken while listening, while spoken directions are given to dictate the route’s course. Although the instructions remain the same each time the walk is undertaken, depending on the starting location and the initial direction the walk will always be different, giving each participant a unique experience and allowing the work to be experienced multiple times, always with a different route. Exploring the history of where we can and can’t walk, through both historical accounts and the physical walk itself, this work provides a clarion call to address the deeply-rooted inequalities in our society, and demonstrates how these are manifested through our built environment.
The walk itself will last around 45 minutes, and there is a short introduction to listen to before you begin. A full transcript is also available, for those who may not be able to listen to the audio recording or would prefer to read it instead.

Euan Lynn is a multidisciplinary artist based in the North East of England. Working across a range of media, most commonly audio, moving image and photography, his work explores how political ideologies are embedded within our built environment, and how we can reactivate these latent potentials held within.

Euan’s practice grounds itself in historical research, identifying ways in which the pasts of our buildings can be confronted to speak about our present. In doing this, the politics of a space can be subverted or reinstated, removing us from the neoliberal present and providing us with an alternative approach to our environments.
